Since January 2007 under government WEEE (Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment) regulations, we are all obliged and must play
our part to ensure that any electrical and electronic equipment sold (anything that is powered by a plug or a battery), when the product reaches it’s end of life and becomes waste, is separated from other waste types, collected separately and ultimately disposed of in an environmentally sound manner (recycled and reused).
The RoHS regulations (Restriction of Hazardous Substances) covers
the same group of Electrical and Electronic Equipment products and prohibits these product groups from having Hazardous substances, specified in the regulations, contained within them.
In essence some of the chemicals and metals in older electrical items can be harmful to environmental health, especially when disposed of in landfill sites. In any case there are valuable materials that can be recovered from these products and reused, saving natural resources and benefiting the environment in that way. By observing the new regulations and working together we all reduce the amount of landfill, resulting contamination and unnecessary waste of reusable materials.
The WEEE regulations only applies to electrical or electronic items. Simply, if the item is powered by, or operates by any form of electricity (ie, mains, batteries, solar power etc.) it is most likely to be included.
For your part as the consumer you are encouraged to examine your electrical waste before throwing it away and in particular look for the rating plate and if the following logo is present you must not throw it in your household waste.
Please take this waste to your nearest Designated Collection Facility (DCF) where special facilities exist for correct disposal.
